The typical bed sheet set

The typical bed sheet set is a fitted sheet, top sheet, and 1-2 pillowcases.

You also don’t want an excessively high thread count because tighter weave can lead to material breakage and sheets that aren’t durable. These sheets are woven in a long lateral pattern and are chemically treated in a process called mercerization that soaks the cotton fabric strands in lye then an acid wash. More expensive cotton sheets and those with higher thread counts tend to last longer than budget options.

Bed sheets are a big part of the quality of your sleep. Each Percale Sheet Set includes a fitted sheet with a pocket depth of 16″, along with two pillowcases. The sheets and pillowcases in this collection are made from 400TC blended Egyptian cotton, a material that closely mirrors the silky-soft texture and natural breathability of authentic Egyptian cotton.

Each set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. The fitted sheet in all sizes offers a pocket depth of 17″, allowing it to be used with most mattresses made today (including high-profile hybrids and innersprings). Our Best Value pick, the Combed-Cotton Sheet Set from California Design Den, is exceptionally low-priced at less than $50 in all seven sizes.

Yarn quality also plays a part in the look and feel of sheets, as finer yarns tend to create a finer sheet fabric. In general, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet, but the weave and type of thread may affect the “hand” of the material so that a sheet with a lower thread count may actually be softer than one with a higher count. Use of good quality elastic make fitted sheets durable.

In China, a four-piece set consists of a duvet cover, two pillowcases and either a fitted or flat sheet. A particular way of folding and tucking while making the bed, known as “hospital corners,” is sometimes used when the bottom sheet is flat rather than fitted. The purpose of a fitted bottom sheet is to keep it from slipping off the mattress while the bed is in use.

Then, in the warmer months, you may use a bedcover in place of a quilt cover set to make your bedding lighter. We have pretty quilted bedding with scalloped trim and lots of separates, which enable you to select exactly what you need rather than buying in sets.
